The latest number of US weekly jobless claims data has just hit the screens. Last week we saw quite a surprising drop back in the number of claims, to 218,000. The markets were expecting the number to be around 220,000 today. The actual number is 225,000 . Ahead of this the USD/JPY had backed away from a couple of failed attempts to reclaim the 147 handle it gave up much earlier today. The high prior to that was set during the Asian session, at 147.24. The low since that high was set at 146.30 after the European equity markets fell back not long after the opening. The dollar was trading around 146.70 leading into this data release. The initial reaction to the data saw the dollar fall to around 146.50 and then bounce to 146.80. This data is not exactly significant, either way you choose to cut it and the ISM report could be of much more consequence at 2pm GMT. The USD/JPY is currently trading at 146.65
