S+P 500 overtakes the Dow Jones as Amazon lifts
Shares in Amazon are currently over 6% higher this afternoon and that is pushing the S+P 500 higher again from the opening. So, now the broader measure of the US stock markets has overtaken the Dow Jones in terms of percentage gains on the day. That is because whilst both indexes include Apple (which is lower), the Dow Jones does not have the driving force from Amazon, as that stock is not a Dow component. The S+P officially reopened today at 5,723.22, from a close last night at 5,705.45. The index is right now pushing towards 5,765
