Record closes on Wall Street for the Dow Jones and S+P 500

The Dow Jones and S+P 500 both reached new heights on Friday and both set record closes. The focus of this update is on the Dow and another update will look at the S+P 500 later this morning. The Dow reached a new all time high, at 42,899 and later posted a new all time record daily and weekly close, at 42,863. That close was 409 points above the previous record close. The Asian markets overnight have seen gains in mainland China of as much as 2% today. The Japanese markets are closed for a public holiday today and Kong Kong is lower. It is a US holiday later today (Columbus Day), but the NYSE and Nasdaq indexes will be open. However, the US bond markets will not and that could make for rather subdued levels of participation later today. There will also be no US Q3 earnings reports published today. The Dow Jones futures are ever so slightly lower just now this morning, but not in any way that is of much consequence at this stage of the day
