Nasdaq 100 matches record high but strangely no further

Yesterday evening the Nasdaq 100, which had been outperforming the other major US stock market indexes, extended its gains. It rose above 16,700 and then reached a high of 16,764, which exactly matched its previous record high, set on November 22, 2021. The index then backed off slightly to post its highest close of 2023, when ending the session at 16,729. However, despite not pushing past 16,764, that was the highest ever daily close for the index. To be honest I am a little surprised it did not make it even 1 point above 16,764, but of course there is plenty of opportunity for that to happen later today. Overnight the Asian markets are mixed, with losses in China being offset by a jump back above 33k in the Nikkei 225. Of course the gains in the Nikkei have been driven by the unchanged BOJ policy decision today. The Nasdaq 100 futures have held a pretty tight range since the US close. The index is currently priced to open a little lower, right now at around 16,710
