At 6pm GMT the US Federal Reserve is expected to keep its Fed funds rate on hold, at a mid-point of 4.375%. Any other outcome will deliver a surprise for the markets. The continued vitriolic rhetoric towards the Fed and its boss from the US President is unlikely to change the minds of the FOMC (Federal Open Market Committee) and it is worth noting that whatever mud Trump slings at Powell, there are 12 voting members on the FOMC who decide on monetary policy. On the assumption the Fed does nothing this evening the markets will be very keen to see what Powell has to say in his usual 6.30pm GMT press debrief. Ahead of all this the Dow Jones futures are higher today and pricing a reopening above 41k just now. The index closed 389 points lower yesterday, at 40,829 after hitting a session low earlier in the day, at 40,759.The high seen was set at 41,164. The Dow Jones was the worst performer amongst the major US indexes yesterday. Whatever happens by the close tonight there is sure to be some swings later today. As to whether that ends up being positive or negative by the close looks in the balance right now, despite the higher opening calls this morning
