Dow Jones closes above 40k for the first time ever

On Friday the Dow Jones industrial average of 30 leading US companies rose to set a new record , at 40,257. The index later managed to post its first ever daily and weekly close above 40,000 on Friday, ending the session at exactly that level. The gains in the Dow Jones again pretty matched those seen in the Nasdaq 100 in percentage terms. The earnings session got underway on Friday and the performance of the banking sector was disappointing and that helped the S+P 500 to underperform the other two indexes- more on all that later today. Meantime, the Asian markets are mixed this morning, with losses in the Nikkei 225 really standing out as the big loser today. However, the Dow Jones futures are still in the green this morning, currently indicating a reopening at around 40,085
