Dow Jones backs off from new record at 41,420

The divergence between the Dow Jones and the Nasdaq 100 was evident right from the opening bell and it remained that way right to the closing bell. The Dow Jones did reach a new record above that which was noted here earlier in the day, but it could not hold it for more than a few seconds and slipped back after posting a new all time high at 41,420. The index subsequently fell back to a session low at 41,140, before recovering somewhat into the close, at 41,240. That close whilst certainly not a record, was 65 points higher than Friday. Overnight the Dow Jones futures have traded lower, but right now are not much changed from where the index closed last night in terms of the implied opening for later on. The news flow has been pretty light overnight too.
